NETGEAR Announces Another First With Launch of Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

Unique All-in-One Solution Simplifies and Secures Internet Sharing by Integrating Cable Modem, 802.11b Wireless Router, and Firewall

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — November 18, 2002 — NETGEAR, Inc., a worldwide provider of easy-to-use, high performance networking products, today announced another first with the launch of the NETGEAR Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (CG814M), the industry’s only true all-in-one networking solution. By integrating a cable modem and 802.11b wireless router in a single space-saving solution, the CG814M simplifies Internet sharing. With the addition of advanced firewall functionality, NETGEAR’s all-in-one solution now makes networking more secure.

Ideal for high-speed Internet access to cable broadband-based home and small business networks, the sleek, space-saving CG814M is a high-performance wireless, Ethernet, USB Plug-and-Play Internet gateway that incorporates a DOCSIS 1.0-compliant (DOCSIS 1.1-upgradable) cable modem, eliminating the added expense, space and cabling requirements of a separate cable modem. In addition to providing secure network protection through a NAT-based broadband router and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall, the CG814M features networking flexibility provided by a four-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet switch, USB port and 802.11b-compliant wireless access point.

"NETGEAR has always been dedicated to making networking easier and safer for homes and growing businesses," explained Patrick Lo, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of NETGEAR. "The launch of the CG814M represents perhaps the ultimate all-in-one solution for broadband networking. By integrating a complete networking solution into one box, we have simplified and secured Internet sharing for customers."

The CG814M, which supports up to 253 computers on the network through four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, provides secure protection from external attacks and hackers through features that include a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall, NAT firewall with VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through and auto-partitioning on each port to protect each installed computer from damaged network connections. The unit also provides administrative control over internal network usage through URL content filtering, time-of-day usage limits, e-mailed reports of browsing activities, and optional real-time e-mail alerts.

To ease the installation process, the CG814M features a USB port for simple Plug-and-Play connectivity, an animated Install Assistant to lead the user through each step of the installation process, and a browser-based graphic user interface.

Security features of the CG814M include: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall to prevent Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) which includes logging, reporting and e-mail alerts, and Web URL content filtering. Other features include: VPN pass-through, DHCP server, port range forwarding, exposed host (DMZ), and DNS Proxy.

Backed by a three-year warranty and 24/7 technical support, the NETGEAR’s CG814M Wireless Cable Modem Gateway is compatible with Windows, UNIX, Macintosh, NetWare, and Linux O/S, and will be available in December 2002, via retailers, direct marketers, and e-commerce sites, at a street price of $279.
